Gayle San Interview
Interview mit Gayle San:
Mail-Interview mit Galye San im August 2001:
1. Why is it that you make music?
I've been into music since I was a kid and its something I love and enjoy doing. Music is total freedom as it has no rules!!
2. What are you listen to as privat person?
When I'm at home,I love something totally the opposite of techno which is jazz. I love blues too.
3. First record you bought?
It was a James Brown record, I can't remember what its called anymore.
4. How often do you dj a week?
Normally its 2 or 3 times a week, I prefer to just do 2 as I need time for days in my studio and stuff.
5. What's your comment on the past, present and future of electronic music?
We've seen how the electronic music has evolved in the years. It has gone through a few changes but not dramatically but it had definitely got more interesting as a lot of different elements been added to electronic music, we've seen influences from countries producing electronic music with their own blend of local musical, influences which is great for techno as it'll keep it constantly cutting edge/ fresh and not monotonous as techno been described. I heard years ago people saying to me techno music is dying but it hasn't and will not. It's going to go on and the sound will be more diverse because techno producers are constantly looking for that new elements of sound to add to their creativity, which is how it should be.
6. Do you remain true to your own style or do you make new trends your own?
It's a dream of every producers/ Djs to start a musical trend,I think. I've always had this sound in my head whether i'm buying records or producing records, I normally go for a certain sound.I think it's funny when people tell me why I don't have this or that record as all the other djs are playing them.
I never buy records because everyone has got them or there's a big hype about the record but I get the records because it moves me, something has to click when I listen to the records. It has to be "fitting" for my set, so yes, I stick to my own style no matter what.
7. Your most beautiful or exciting gig?
There has been quite a few bit I will always remember playing at the Zouk club in Singapore for the first time as it was my first homecoming gig back in Singapore after 11 years of not playing there. Of course things were different when I left Singapore, and to come back and experience the techno music acceptance, (as when I left singapore, techno was unheard off) to play in the best club in Asia, fantastic people and it made one of the best gigs on my list.
8. A classic record?
To me, it has to be Plastic Dreams on R&S records, years ago.I hope I got the
names right ...
9. Do you help new talents to become respected or more successful? If yes, how?
Yes.I've started this concept on my label Equator whereby new talents/ producers who don't get many chances of getting their stuff heard, to send in their promos of their work and if it's good, I will release the tracks and hopefully, this will give them a new start in getting their names out there and their work to be recognised and heard too. There are many new talents out there who are good DJs/ producers but don't get the chances to show their craft.
10. What's your inspiration for djing and/ or producing at the moment?
The crowd plays a big part in inspiring me when I'm behind the decks.I get the energy from them and the vibes to how I stir my sets. Of course in every countries, you get different types of crowd but at the end of the day, the vibes the crowd gives out, inspires what I do when I'm djing, and of course finding unique records excites me as to how I want to mix it into my sets and see the reactions from the crowd, it's all inspiring as it gives me ideas for what I want to create when I'm in the studio too. I get ideas from just the smallest sounds as it ticks my "brain bpm" off. I can talk about this on and on but I won't ...
