Stardust 'Music Sounds Better With You' (Virgin)When you're old and grey, you'll bore your grandchildren by going on and on about this record, and muttering "things aren't what they used to be". The Face 'Needin U' (Manifesto) David Morales quit remixing Mariah Carey long enough to turn out this thumping disco cut-up. Shame on you if you sing "Need a screw!" instead. Run DMC 'It's Like That' (Profile) Obscure Jason Nevins-remixed ten-inch white label that just grew and grew, launching a global old skool revival in the process. Mousse T vs Hot N'Juicy 'Horny' (AM:PM) Mousse T's disco track just needed the vocals of two Birmingham club babes to catapult it into the charts. Fatboy Slim 'Rockafeller Skank' (Skint) It slows down, it speeds up, it's got surf guitars. It's a party in a record. Sample spotters will know it's built on'Beat Girl' by the John Barry Seven and a Northern Soul tune called 'Sliced Tomatoes'. Bob Sinclar 'Gym Tonic' (East West) Norman Cook called this aerobic thumper "a lawsuit waiting to happen". And sure enough, Jane Fonda told Mr Sinclar to 5, 6, 7, 8 and fuck off. Then Spacedust ripped it off and got to number one. Cevin Fisher 'Freaks Come Out' (Sound Of Ministry) Mild mannered New York producer Cevin chucks together a Donna Summer bassline, express train beats and a voice saying, "the freaks come out". And they did. Paul van Dyk 'For An Angel 98' (Deviant) Strap on your wings and sob with emotion to the most moving piano line since Robert Miles' 'Children'. Energy 52 'Cafe Del Mar' (VC) Been around for ages, but this was the year it went through the roof. Helped by a rather thumping Nalin & Kane remix. Binary Finary '1998' (Positiva) Paul van Dyk again, rejigging an obscure trance track into a huge rocket that takes off and tears a hole in the ceiling. |
