Who got the funk? Ten of the finest funkateers Shy FX Shy FX, Godfather of the good groove, has been responsible for two of the year's biggest tunes: 'Bambaataa' and 'Pandora's Box'. "I was just trying to make a jungle tune as if it was from the jungle". Watch out for Dilinjah's remix of 'Bambaataa', currently tearing it up at Movement. Funk factor: 10/10 E-Z ROLLERS 'Weekend World' typified the emerging slinky funk groove earlier this year, and their compilation 'Drumfunk Hooliganz' consolidated their position as leaders of the new funk. And their 'Walk This Way' stole the show in Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels. Funk factor: 9,5/10 ADAM F Signs of the funk were there last year with the 'Dirty Harry' track on his 'Colours' album, but his recent 'Brand New Funk' has really hit the nail on the head. And the dancefloor in the groin. Funk factor: 7,5/10 Peshay Peshay is the grand messenger of the downlow. When he isn't surfing jazzy territories he uses slapping basses and deep-fried breaks to create stunning funk overtures. Next year's album should ensure Peshay takes his rightful place at the very top. Funk factor: 9,5/10 |

Solid State East London three-piece behind State of the Art, responsible for the stand-out track on the recent 'Chemical Pilot' album - plus the theme tune to Carlton TV's The Lads. Funk factor: 9,5/10 DJ Addiction Fabio's partner at Swerve. His 'Live At The Jazz Club' (Partisan) wandered into deep jazz territory but the funk was never far away. As proved on the collaboration with Carlito, 'Future Elements'. Check his addition to the 'Transcentral Connection' series. Funk factor: 9/10 Prisoners Of Technology The crew behind that drum n'bass reworking of the Beastie's 'Intergalactic'. Mulder Mulder, from the Aphrodite/ Mickey Finn stable of excellence, fuses on-the-one breaks with syncopated acid to create huge, firing ultra funk. Check his mix of The Prodigy's 'Funky Shit'. Funk factor: 7/10 Skynet & Stakka Brighton duo behind the dark funk on their own Audio Blueprint imprint. Their approach, less obvious in the b-line department, is to work the rhythms for ultimate funky effect. Check too LoLife's 'The Trouble with Funk' on the excellent compilation 'Voyager'.
