2.31am Wander around the balconies and podium outskirts. Spot lots of people snogging. And lots of people dressed as cats. And Martine McCutcheon, her out of EastEnders, doing it on the dancefloor
3.00am Promoter Jan goes round with plates of half-time oranges. Very thoughtful
3.05am Nippa 'Deep' Downey (the 'Deep' isn't because he plays deep house, by the way he doesn't) is in command. I didn't realise they made house records like this anymore. Fantastic. Then a security bloke steps up to the wheels of steel and executes a not-bad mix. "Salarf, innit?" he says
3.45am Get invited to a chill out by a stranger but we have to leave to go to a hardcore rave on Hastings pier. All in the car are so excited by this prospect that we nearly fall asleep
Danny Rampling on The Zap
"I play there every four to six weeks, and The Zap has its own unique atmosphere. It's partly because it's so close to the ocean which always makes me feel good, but the crowd are also very open-minded and the atmosphere is electric. The best time? Probably when we went skinny-dipping afterwards last summer!"
